Fujitsu SPARC M12 Capacity-on-Demand – a Valuable Feature of All M-Class Servers

In keeping with the most recent SPARC M12 roadmap Fujitsu and Oracle have announced new models of the SPARC M-12-2 server.  The new M12-2 increases available memory slots per CPU module from 16 to 24, increasing total maximum memory by 50% to 3TB per 2-socket M12-2.  The new systems also feature a significant increase in power efficiency.  Fujitsu SPARC M12 Capacity-on-Demand continues to be a standard feature on all M servers.

Fujitsu M servers’ Capacity-on-Demand allows activating only the cores needed – as few as one (1) in the M12.

Available in both the M12-2 and M12-2S versions, the servers are ready now to configure and quote.  The Oracle-Fujitsu SPARC M12 roadmap continues to deliver industry leading technology and engineering.

There has been much speculation recently regarding the future of the SPARC processor and Solaris.

While Oracle has indicated the current M8 processor may be their last for the foreseeable future, development of the SPARC platform will continue through the combined efforts of Oracle and Fujitsu.

A few key points to consider:

  • Fujitsu and Sun Microsystems (now Oracle) were joint developers of the SPARC processor from its inception. At times (e.g. M3000, M4000, M5000) Sun systems used Fujitsu processors exclusively.
  • Fujitsu’s latest iteration, the Fujitsu SPARC M12, is the most advanced processor in production on any platform. Solaris 10 on Bare Metal
In acknowledgement to the large number of users still running Solaris 10, Fujitsu has engineered all Fujitsu SPARC M12 and Fujitsu M10 systems to run either Solaris 10 or 11 as the native operating systems.  This provides the further advantage that older systems running Solaris 8 or 9 can be virtualized into a Solaris 10 zone on a new M-series sever, facilitating the upgrade of those systems onto new hardware while preserving installed legacy applications.
